Doctors Are Working Fewer Hours

February 23, 2010 - Doctors have steadily cut their work hours over the past decade, a new study appearing Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association finds.

Average hours dropped from about 55 hours a week to 51 from 1996 to 2008, according to the analysis. Work-hour limits for residents were introduced in 2003 and brought down the average. But even when researchers removed residents from the analysis, they still found a nearly 6 percent decline in work hours.
